Assamese community in Andaman celebrates Rongali Bihu

Port Blair, Apr 15: Rongali Bihu is the harvest festival of Assam and is celebrated with much fanfare to mark the beginning of the new Assamese Calendar Year.
On April 14, the Assamese community living in Andaman & Nicobar Islands celebrated a day-long program with great enthusiasm and fervour following all Covid 19 precautions.
The event started with the traditional lighting of the lamp and the singing of Jatiya Sangeet ‘O Mur Apunar Dekh’. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest Mr. Diganta Gogoi, IFS congratulated the Assamese community residing here for coming together and organizing the program.
Citing the song of legendary Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika ‘Bohag Mathu Eeti Ritu Nohoi’, he stressed the importance of safeguarding Assamese culture and heritage. A cultural program with prayer songs, Bihu songs and Bihu dance was presented on the occasion.
Mr. Seemanta Kumar Deka, HOD BBA Tourism, JNRM, Dr. Dipon Sharmah, HOD Botany, JNRM, Mr. Bhrigu Kumar Borah, Branch Manager, LIC, Dr. Janardan Saikia, Plant Protection Officer, Mr. Ashim Doley, Commando, Navy, Mr. Naba Bora and others spoke on the occasion. Traditional delicious food was also served to everyone present at the celebration.
