Empowering Women through NRLM Schemes

Port Blair, July 25: Women empowerment is one of the main pillars for the development of the rural economy. A prosperous rural economy is impossible without women empowerment, as women seem to be the main driving force for the economy to develop and prosper.

One of the best examples of self employed women around us is Smt. Rita Sadhakwho is doing a remarkable job by starting a petty shop for her livelihood. Explaining her past, Smti. Rita Sadhak a rural woman in Diglipur Block and one of the beneficiaries of the DAY-NRLM Scheme, associated herslfwith Nari Shakti Self Help Group since 2019. She joined the SHG to initiate self-employment and start a livelihood by opening a Petty Shop by taking a loan of Rs.35,000/- from VO, which she hasrepaid successfully.

Presently, she is running her shop from her home and supporting her family financially. At present, she is earning sufficient amount to support her husband to sustain the financial needs of her family and is setting an example of women empowerment.The transformation in her lifeis because of social and financial support provided by her Self Help Group formed under DAY-NRLM scheme.

While expressing her gratitude towards the Department of Rural Development, Rita Sadhak has said that “I have fulfilled my dreams which would not be possible if I was not in a SHG Group. NRLM not only paved my way of success but also uplifted my identity and value for work which helped to support my family and children’s education”.

The National Rural Livelihood Mission aims to alleviate rural poverty and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for the rural poor, especially rural women. The basic idea behind this programme of Government is to unite the poor into Self Help Group and make them capable of self-employment. NRLM, while empowering women is leading National Rural Economic Transformation.
