Gram Panchayat Long Island Launched Free Public Wi-Fi Hotspot

Port Blair, July 22: Mr. Jitendra Narain, IAS,Chief Secretary, A&N Islands during his recent visit to the North & Middle Andaman District had directed the Directorate of RD, PRIs and ULBs to provide broadband and FTTH to all Gram Panchayats of North and Middle Andaman District in order to provide free Wi-Fi hotspot facility to the students and general public within a time bound manner.

In a swift action, the Directorate of RD, PRIs & ULBs today has launched free Wi-Fi hotspot in the Gram Panchayat Long Island for the general public and especially for the studentsof the area to access free Wi-Fi connectionon their devices for the online classes as and when required. This initiative would facilitate people to accessWi-Fi hotspot with faster internet than what is often available in cellular data networks.

Recently, the Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) has completed its set up in this Gram Panchayat and provided internet connectivity under the Bharat Net project, which is one of the schemes of the Govt. of India, which would facilitate online e-gram Panchayat services, e-governance, e-education, e-health, e-medicine, e-citizen, e-agriculture, etc. and an impetus to make in India, Digital India and start-up India initiatives.

The general public of Long Island has expressed their gratitude to the Rural Development Department for providing a free Wi-Fi hotspot to make them digitally empowered.
