In times of pandemic- employment offered to rural population through MGNREGA works

Port Blair, June 23: During the lockdown, to offer employment as a livelihood measure to those who need it, MGNREGA played the role of sole source of income for rural households whether during pandemic or otherwise.

 

Amidst the lockdown, MGNREGA has taken upworks with the prime motive to provide employment to the rural population for their livelihood and has successfully generated a total of 22,497 persondays during the months of April to June, 2021.

 

An example of sheer dedication can be seen in the work “C/o of rural road from Borang village to Khoda khadi under GP Mayabunder”which was executed even during the lockdown with an estimated costof Rs. 10,64,189/- with estimated generation of 3889 persondays. The road being executed in the Borang village, one of the remote village under Mayabunder Gram Panchayat with an estimated length of the road being 1410m shall connect Borang village to Khoda khadi benefitting more than 30 families. The school going children and fishermen will be the primary beneficiaries. This work has provided employment to around 50 beneficiaries generating around 3022 persondays till date.

 

 

Now with the ease in lockdown and further release of 1st Tranche of fund from the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), it is expected to witness a great surge in MGNREGA demand.

 

Keeping in view of demand Mr. Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Secretary (RD/P)/Commissioner (MGNREGA) has requested all the Blocks to resume all MGNREGA works and provide employment to the needy workers of Gram Panchayats. Accordingly, many works shall be resumed in the Islands from the forthcoming week.
