Indian Coast Guard Conducts International Coastal Cleanup Day-2019

Port Blair, Sept 22: Indian Coast Guard, A&N Region organized a massive coastal cleanship drive on the occasion of International Coastal Cleanup Day-2019 on 21 Sep 2019 at Corbyn’s beach, Marina Park at Port Blair as part of “Swatch Sagar Abhhiyan” under the aegis of Honb’le Prime Minister’s initiative “Swatcch Bharat Abhhiyan”. About 1000 plus school and college students, NGO’s, NCC cadets and Coast Guard personnel along with their families participated in this noble drive. Mr. Dependra Pathak, IPS, Director General of Police, Andaman and Nicobar was the Chief Guest for the event.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest emphasized the dedication and commitment of Coast Guard fraternity towards rendering selfless services for the people of the Islands. He further stated that Indian Coast Guard has transformed this beautiful idea of coastal cleanup into a tool which spreads awareness about the necessity of cleaner maritime environment and environmental preservation. Quoting that Andaman & Nicobar Islands are a bio-diverse & eco-sensitive area, he reminded the gathering that we are surrounded from all sides with ocean, therefore harmony with the ocean is important part of our living. During his address, he reiterated the importance of organizing the event and significance of having clean and sparkling beaches around the world which is connected by the oceans surrounding us.

During the event, Naval NCC Cadets also presented a road show to raise awareness on environmental pollution.

The coastal cleanup drive was conducted at Port Blair and all other locations in Andaman & Nicobar islands having CG presence including Diglipur, Mayabandar, Hutbay, Kamorta and Campbell Bay. During this drive over 1500 kgs of trash was collected from different beaches of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, which was later handed over to Municipal Corporation for further disposal.

Indian Coast Guard is committed to the protection of marine environment and shall continue to organize such drives to educate and motivate the general public on the issue.
