Indian Coast Guard conducts several events in A&N region as run-up to International Yoga Day

Port Blair, Jun 08: Under the aegis of HQ Andaman and Nicobar Command, Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (A&N) along with units based in the region conducted Yoga sessions, Community Interaction Program (CIP) as well as medical camps as part of the run-up to International Day of Yoga on 29th May 2022.

            In North Andaman, ICG District no. 9 (Diglipur), conducted a special Community Interaction Program at RK Gram. The community interaction program was focused to educate fishermen about the importance of carrying life-saving gears and firefighting equipment while venturing into the sea.

            The demonstration of donning life jackets, the procedure of using ‘Search and Rescue Transponder’ and a practical demonstration of firefighting were undertaken. Additionally, fishermen were appraised regarding the usage of DAT (Distress Alert Transponder) and SOS procedures for seeking assistance during an emergency.

             The fishermen were informed about the use of the toll-free number ‘1554’ for seeking Coast Guard assistance at sea. The fishermen were requested to maintain a lookout for poachers and illegal immigrants and to act as ‘Eyes and Ears’ of the Indian Coast Guard.

            A ‘Medical Camp’ in association with Community Health Center (Diglipur) was also organized as part of this community interaction programme. The Chief Medical Officer of CHC (Diglipur) delivered a lecture on ‘Prevention and Management of Tuberculosis’. As part of the camp, free-of-cost screening of villagers for non-communicable diseases was undertaken. Fisher folks were also provided first-hand training on First Aid, Fracture Fixation and CPR procedure. A lecture on Yoga and its importance was delivered by a yoga trainer from CHC (Diglipur).

            At Port Blair, Coast Guard District Headquarters No.14, conducted a yoga session in collaboration with the “Art of Living” foundation, wherein yoga classes were conducted for all coast guard personnel. Mr. Krishna Rao of the “Art of Living” foundation imparted the Yoga classes describing the benefits of yoga in today’s sedentary lifestyle. Special emphasis was laid on including yoga in the daily fitness regime to ensure a healthy body and a healthy mind.

            Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 10, in the Nicobar Islands conducted Yoga sessions and a community interaction programme at B’Quarry beach on 30 May 22. Coast Guard personnel and the local fishing community participated in the events with fervour. The various events were dedicated to the development of a healthy and prosperous society in the region. Coast Guard conducted all the events like a run-up to International Yoga Day in line with the Coast guard motto of “Vayam Rakshamah – We Protect”. Coast Guard is committed to safer coast, sea and lives in service to the Nation.
