International Oceans Day by PBMC in collaboration with GIZ-India

Port Blair, June 12: The Port Blair Municipal Council in collaboration with GIZ-India organized an event in connection withthe International Oceans Day, 2022 celebration on 09.06.2022 at Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Auditorium of PBMC under the campaign of Clean Up Port Blairon the theme of My Waste, My Responsibility, with an aim of creating a healthy ocean with the support of public & stakeholders.

Smti. KavitaUday Kumar, Chairperson, PBMC was the Chief Guest and Shri. AzizulRehman, Sr. Vice-Chairperson, PBMC was the Guest of Honour, the Ward Councilors & other staeholers were special guests to the program. The program was attended by the Team of Port Blair Municipal Council, GIZ-India Technical team from Delhi and various stakeholders viz. Market Association, Grains &grocers association, Andaman Association of Tour Operators, Lion’s Club, Media, etc.

Shri. Avinash Kumar Singh, Superintending Engineer, PBMC, Port Blair welcomed the gathering by highlighting the need to celebrate the event, Dr. Bharat Bhushan, Deputy Project Head, GIZ highlighted the GIZ-India collaborative support to Port Blair viz., Cities Combating Plastic Entering into Marine Environment. Shri. VV. Dinesh Kumar Member Secretary, Andaman and Nicobar Pollution Control Committee addressed the gathering on the ill effects of Single-Use Plastics and their connection to the ocean followed by a Skit/NukkadNattak on My waste My Responsibility stagedSwachatta Awareness Team of PBMC.

In order to encourage the Hospitality units to adopt good practices, Hotel competition was announced and Posters were released during the program by the dignitaries and highlighted the areas of assessment by Shri. AviralSaxena, Technical Expert, GIZ for Port Blair. A documentary videoshow casing Best Practices of PBMC made by GIZ-India was also released along with other awareness videos. PBMC’s Way forward towardthe Green Marriage Certification initiative was also highlighted during the program by theSuperintending Engineer, PBMC.

Certificates and gifts were awarded to the participants in the Plastic Lao, UpharPao campaign organized at Fish Landing Jetty, Junglighat and highlighted the contribution of children in inculcating the behavior change in the area during the program.

Shri. Aziz Ur Rehman Senior Vice Chairperson PBMC, addressed the audience and highlighted the importance of individuals in combating plastic pollution and asked to spread a word of responsibility. He also entrusted the contribution of stakeholders by introducing the eco-friendly products in the market as a step to curb the plastic menace on the Island and also requested all the hospitality units to participate in the Hotel Competition.

Shri. Rajesh Pal, Councilor & Chairperson, Sub-committee for Public Health & Sanitation improvement addressed the public to take the responsibility of waste and urged to penalize the violator strictly for the mass awareness, stressed introducing some monetary benefit to the Safaimitras as a token of rewards and highlighted to improve SwachhSurvekshan ranking of Port Blair. He also given the vote of thanks to the Chief Guest, Guest of Honor, stakeholders/ associations, PBMC & GIZ-India Team and all the Safaimitras of PBMC for their relentless efforts to keep the city clean &swachh.
