Journey from Waste to wealth begins, Swaraj Dweep Gram Panchayat earns Rs. 65000 from Dry Wastes

 

Port Blair, March 28: The Directorate of RD & PRIs has finalized the collection, transportation, management and processing of Dry Waste generated in rural areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands through authorized recycler with the objective of converting waste to wealth.
Proper management of waste is important for building sustainable and liveable atmosphere in the Islands. Recently, Gram Panchayat- Swaraj Dweep under Prothrapur Block in South Andaman District handed over more than 18000 Kgs of Dry Waste containing bailed plastic, cardboard etc. collected from the Gram Panchayat to the authorized recycler.
For the Solid Waste Management in rural areas, the Directorate of RD, PRIs and ULBs has set-up 26 SWM clusters covering the 70 Gram Panchayats, wherein Dry Wastes are further segregated and bailed using the bailing machine.
The Wet Waste are recommended to be disposed in situ manner by adopting household level composting, which can further be used in the kitchen gardens as organic manure to make our Islands environmentally sound. The Directorate of RD, PRIs and ULBs is committed to strengthen the rural local bodies for effective implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) to achieve the goal of Zero Waste Islands. The Secretary (RD/PRIs) appeals to general public that source segregation is the way forward.
