Observance of World Blood Donor Day 2021 at Blood Bank, G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair and CHC Bambooflat, South Andaman

Port Blair, June 15: Andaman & Nicobar AIDS Control Society observed “World Blood Donor Day 2021” on 14th June, 2021 at the premises of G.B. Pant Hospital in the Blood Bank (Blood Centre) by organising blood donation camp contributed by “Yuva Bharat Samaj Seva Charitable Trust”, A & N Islands and CHC Bambooflat, South Andaman organized by “With You” a NGO of South Andaman in coordination with Directorate of Health Services,   A & N Administration. 

            On this august occasion a very brief programme was organized to honour and thank the devoted and committed voluntary blood donors by maintaining all the protocols of Covid-19 scenario.   

During this Covid-19 period access to safe and timely blood supply to the critical patients is a very important aspect to be focused upon.  Despite this pandemic, donors have continued to donate blood and plasma to patients who need an urgent transfusion. 

The camp was organized under the guidance of Dr M. Joy, Project Director, A & N AIDS Control Society and Director, State Blood Transfusion Council, A & N Islands and he also supervised the camp. He spoke on the occasion after welcoming one and all. He exhorted everyone to come forward   fearlessly to donate blood voluntarily.  He thanked all those voluntary donors who have contributed immensely during the covid-19 season and lockdown period.  It is a great achievement for the blood bank that it never went dry because almost every day 10-15 units of blood was collected during the lockdown period.

The blood donation was facilitated by the Dr. N. R. Kodhandram, Deputy Director (Blood Safety)/ Medical Officer incharge, Blood Bank, G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair and Dr. R. K. Halder, Chief Medical Officer I/c, CHC Bambooflat. It is an occasion to emphasise that apart from being a noble cause, blood donation will also keep a person updated of his physical status. The donors were examined for their eligibility to donate blood and briefed the donors on various aspect and importance of blood donation.

National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC), National AIDS Control Organisation, New Delhi has mandated to promote voluntary blood donation to make blood accessible and available through well  co-ordinated blood transfusion  services in our country.

Later, voluntary donors donated blood and slogan of NBTC was also released as pocket pin – “Rakt Daan Karke Dekho Accha Lagta Hai”.  A total of 84 units of blood were collected during the campaign.  53 units at CHC Bambooflat and 31 units at G.B. Pant Hospital respectively.

The “World Blood Donor Day 2021” is observed to commemorate and pay homage to Mr Karl Landsteiner, Nobel Laureate.  Who is credited for his discovery of ABO blood group. The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank donors for their voluntary and life saving activities.

The technical team from Blood Bank, G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair and A & N AIDS Control Society ensured that the donated blood units are screened for the blood transmissible diseases.  They also examined the donors for eligibility. Donors certificate were also distributed to the voluntary donors.

Later  in the evening  Dr M. Joy, Director, State Blood Transfusion Council, A & N Islands  and Project Director, A & N AIDS Control Society participated in a prgoramme  projected as “Doctors Speak” on the Doordarshan Kendra Port Blair, to create  awareness  regarding  blood donation to the masses.
