Onam is a Keralite festival celebrated on the day of Thiruvonam Nakshatra, the 22nd star in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August – September). Onam commemorates the return of Emperor Mahabali’s spirit, which is said to visit the godly state every year on this day. Mahabali was a noble demon king and an ardent worshipper of Lord Vishnu. Onam is also a harvest festival.
