Training on “High density Multi species Cropping System” held at Harminder Bay under STC

Port Blair, Feb 27: A one day training programme on “High Density Multi Species Cropping System (HDMSC)”was organized by ICAR- Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair under the guidance of Dr. A. Kundu, Director in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Little Andaman at Harminder Bayon22ndFebruray, 2019. The programme was organized under the All India Coordinated Research Project on tuber crops (TSP), with an objective of enhancing the livelihood opportunities of tribal farmers through integration of various Horticultural crops in their farming systems with special emphasis on tuber crops.

Smt. Kitty, First Captain, Tribal Council, Harminder Bay presided over the function as chief guest on the occasion while Shri. Yoseph, Third captain was the guest of honour. In the inaugural address, Dr. B.A. Jerard, Head, Division of Horticulture & Forestry, CIARI has motivated the tribal farmers to adopt High density multi species cropping system in their existing coconut plantationto augment their income, while Dr. S.K. Zamir Ahmed, Principal Scientist, CIARI urged the farmers to derive maximum benefits through integration of fruits and vegetables under organic cultivation. Dr. V. Damodaran, Asst. Chief Tech. Officer & PI, AICRP (TC) presented an over view of the project and explained the scope and importance of tuber crops and its utilization as food, feed and fodder, while Dr. R. Jaya Kumaravaradan, Scientist, CIARI emphasized the marketing opportunities for different commodities followed by interaction with the tribal farmers.

 

In the technical sessions various aspects viz., introduction to HDMSCS, scope and opportunities of HDMSCS, crop management techniques, role of tuber crops as pig feed and economics and value addition in coconut were dealt by the team of experts. Altogether 57tribal farmers including 20 females participated in the training programme which was followed by field visit to the farmers field.
