TURTLE CONSERVATION THROUGH BEACH CLEANUP AT MGMNP WANDOOR

Port Blair, Nov.13: The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is one of the safe heaven in A & N Islands for endangered sea turtles like Leatherback, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, Green Sea Turtle, which visit the beaches of the Park for egg laying. These beaches are loaded with plastic wastes, which are breached ashore due to tidal and wind action, thus degrade the quality of beaches and reduce conservation potential of the park.

As a part of habitat improvement measure, a beach cleanup drive was organized at Boat Island under Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park on 9.11.2019. Altogether 40 people, comprising of college students of JNRM, ANET and few self interested volunteers joined hands and participated in this cleanup drive with the Department of Forest & Environment. 240 Kg of non biodegradable garbage was collected and transported from Wandoor for safe disposal as per approved methods at Brookshabad, PBMC segregation unit.
