Twin Trainings Conducted by KVK, Port Blair

Port Blair, Sept 12: ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Port Blair conducted two training programs on “Design and construction of cost effective poly house” and “Quality planting materials production techniques on fruit crops production” from 8th to 10th September, 2021 at Ferrargunj Gram Panchayat and Shoal Bay Gram Panchayat hall, under Ferrargunj block, a total of 50 farmers and farm women were benefited.

During the trainings Experts from KVK, CIARI elaborated different types of poly houses suitable for the farming communities of these islands and the structural design procedure of construction of a cost effective poly house made with the locally available material and also highlighted the recent advances in design of a poly house including the green house, automation for irrigation, installation of drip and sprinkler irrigation system inside poly house and various climatic factor control mechanisms and also Interacted about the cropping schedule for various crops grown inside a naturally ventilated poly house, different processes involved in poly house cultivation including soil fumigation, bed preparation and bio fertilizer application, insect pests and crop residue management.

On the second training demonstration cum interaction with the trainees about the need of production of quality planting materials of fruit crops for achieving sustainability in fruit production in these islands and also described the different processes involved in plant propagation involving sexual and asexual methods with their advantages and disadvantages, media for preparation of plants in nursery, potting and repotting, selection and raising of root stocks, selection criteria of scion sticks, preparation of plant material for potting.  The trainings were conducted under the active guidance of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
