Port Blair, Sept 06: In continuation of the worker peasant joint struggles including the 9th August 2020 Satyagraha/Jail baro, the CITU, All India Kisan Sabha and All India Agricultural Workers Union had decided to observe country-wide Worker-Peasant Action Day on 5th September, 2020. Rallies, dharnas, Padayatras were organized at village/panchayat/local level on the basic demands of the people.
In Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Andaman and Nicobar State Committee of the CITU has organized a programme in front of the Crusade House Phoenix Bay, Port Blair today evening. Addressing the gathering, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary of the CITU State Committee said that the destructiveness of the government policies in economic, political and social fronts aimed at centralisatio and authoritarianism and also to carry on the communal divisive machinations on the society with a diversionary intent to serve the capitalist landlord classes can be countered only by intensifying the class struggle at the grassroot level. He said that the Modi government, taking advantage of the Covid 19 pandemic and the lockdown, is implementing various anti-people policies in the country.
The demands raised during the Worker Peasant Action Day were (i) Universal Health Care especially free tests and treatment for Covid 19, (ii) Free Ration, (iii) Rs. 7500/- per month income support for next six months (iv) 200 days works in MNREGA @ Rs. 600/-, unemployment allowance and urban employment guarantee, (iv) against Executive Orders on Essential Commodities Act, Farm Trade, Electricity Act, EIA, National Education Policy 2020, National Digital Health Mission, suspension and altering of labour laws and privatization of public sector undertakings and Services.
Workers from different Unions participated in the programme which was organized by observing Covid 19 protocols. SP Kalairajan, Vice President of CITU State Committee was also present.
