A&N Islands Parliamentary Constituency goes to polls today: 3, 17, 878 electorates to cast their franchise through 407 polling stations to elect Isles’ representative to Lok Sabha

Port Blair, April 10: All arrangements are complete for the polls to the Lok Sabha in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Parliamentary Constituency, which goes to poll tomorrow (April11). Polling will take place between 7am and 6pm on April 11. Altogether 15 candidates, including one woman and 9 independents, will contest for the lone Lok Sabha seat from these Islands.

 

This time, a total of 3,17,878 electorates will exercise their franchise to elect the Islands’ representative to the 17th Lok Sabha. This number includes 1,68,701 males and 1,49,168 females and 9 nine voters in third gender category. This is an increase of 48,518 voters from the General Elections 2014. The increase in the voter list was possible due to the constant effort made by the RO’s office by conducting special camps to register eligible voters with the mission “No voter to be left behind”. There is also an increase of 21 Polling Stations in this Election, taking the total number Polling Stations to 407covering the length and breadth of these Islands.

 

The Southernmost Polling Station in the country is at Shastri Nagar, in the Great Nicobar Island. Polling Stations have been set up for tribal as well as other electors at Strait Island for Great Andamanese, Dugong Creek for Onges and Shompen Hut and Lawful Bay for Shompen Tribes.

 

The lowest number of voter is 9 at polling Station at Pilopatia at Little Nicobar while Govt. Middle School, Brichgunj with 3492 voters has been declared as the highest number of electors.

 

For the first time, an attempt will be made on the poll day to have live webcasting from 50 Polling Stations despite connectivity challenges. Awareness on EVMs and VVPAT machines has been created for all persons from various locations. This has been a great help, essentially for the first time voters on how to use the EVMs on the day of poll. SVEEP activities were carried out in all the three Districts to create awareness among the voters about the importance of voting to strengthen democracy and to participate in this big festival i.e General Election-2019.

 

For the first time 11 All Women Polling Stations have been created in all the three Districts. Vidyasagarpalli (Diglipur), Lucknow (Mayabunder) and Parnasala in Rangat have been designated as All Women Polling Station in North & Middle Andaman. Polling Station number 190 (Port Blair), Brindaban-1(Ferrargunj) and Hut Bay-1 at Little Andaman has been designated as All Women Polling Stations. Similarly, Perka (Carnicobar), Vikas Nagar, Kamorta,Chota Inak (Nancowry) and Govind Nagar (Campbell Bay) will function as All Women Polling Station.

 

For the first time Model Polling Station has been created. Altogether, 5 Model Polling Stations have been prepared in North & Middle Andaman District while 9 in South Andaman and 6 in Nicobar District.
