A&N Police Study Circle Organizes Workshop on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances:“YUVA scheme conceptualized during the discussion”

Port Blair, May 05: The Andaman and Nicobar Police Study Circle organized its 4th discussion on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance on 04/05/2019 at Conference hall, Police Head Quarter. Mr. Dependra Pathak IPS Director General of Police, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, senior officers of Andaman and Nicobar Police, Smt. Neha Bansal (Secretary, Social Welfare Board), Dr. S.P Burma (Director of Health Services), Dr. Mitesh Behari (Psychiatrist, GB Pant Hospital), Padmashree Naresh Chandra Lall and Sh Soundara Pandian, Professor, Law College, NGO’s and Mediawere present in the discussion. The gathering was welcomed by Mr. Manoj.C IPS SP(CID) with brief note on the topic. At the outset Mr. Dependra Pathak, IPS Director General of Police highlighted the ill effects of drug abuse & psychotropic substance on the society, especially youngsters and set the context for the discussion. Mr. Yogesh, Senior Scientific Officer, FSL Port Blair explained about the classification and methods followed to administer narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Dr. S.P Burma, Director DHS and Dr. Mithesh Behari speaking on the topic highlighted the ill effects of drugs and presented data of increasing number of patients being admitted for de-addiction from drug and alcohol abuse. Mr. George Lalu DySP (CID) & Inspr. Mahesh Yadav, SHO CSS briefed on investigation and modus operandi followed in NDPS cases. Mr. Manoj. C, IPS SP (CID) briefed on the salient features of NDPS Act and general lacunas in investigation of NDPS cases followed by efforts of A&N Police in awareness creation among public of A&N Islands targeting youth and children.

The Workshop concluded with Mr. Dependra Pathak  IPS  DGP A&N Islands summarizing methods to tackle this menace through i) Awareness creation in Society with coordinated effort among various stakeholders-education department emphasizing more on sports activity and active involvement of students in extra circular activity ii) Effective de-addiction process through which the addict is admitted to the de-addiction centre timely, educating parents of young adults with respect to rehabilitation and preventing relapse and iii) YUVA  scheme  conceptualized during the discussion in which youth entangled in drug menace would be guided to  recover throughs de-addiction centre, emphasizing on sports activity and involvement of NSDC(National Skill Development Centre)in providing skill based training and guidance for employment. Discussion concluded with vote of thanks by Mr. George Lalu DySP (CID), in a release SP (CID), Andaman & Nicobar Islands said.
