Celebration of World Habitat Day by IEI, ANSC on Monday, 01 October 2018

Port Blair, Oct 03: World Habitat Day was celebrated by Andaman & Nicobar State Centre (ANSC) of The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) in association with PBMC & DST, A & N Admn., on Monday, 01 October, 2018 at 3.30 pm at ALHW Conference Hall by organizing Technical Lectures / PPT presentations on the theme given by the United Nations -“Municipal Solid Waste Management”.

Er. Avinash Kumar Singh, EE (SWM & Works) from PBMC delivered a Technical Lecture which dwelt on the implementation, progress and challenges faced in the management of Municipal Solid Waste. He stressed on 4 basic aspects of Solid Waste Management (SWM), which is entrapment, segregation, processing and disposal for management of SWM. His lecture was interspersed with reality scenarios, which brought to fore the challenges being faced. No amount of advertisement will make it a success unless and until it becomes a community participation project and the attitude has to change for the better to keep our surroundings and environment clean so that our future generations do not have to face a dark and debilitating future.

Exhaustive PPT presentation was made on the Theme and “leaving behind a better environment for our future generation” journey uptill now by Shri Rishikesh, Sr. Scientific Officer, DST, A & N Admn. The Presentation traced the Environment journey from the amendments in the Indian Constitution up until the various Acts & Rules 2016 framed to preserve and protect our environment for future generations. The presentation was exhaustive and presented a step by step journey up till now, with the works done, in process as well as plans for future to leave behind a better environment in our pristine islands.

Earlier, Chairman, ANSC, IEI, Er. D. Sathyamoorthy, FIE, Deputy Chief Engineer (Mech.), ALHW welcomed the Engineering Fraternity and others present and exhorted the gathering to have a fruitful discussion on the theme of the Day. Er. Johnson Abraham, MIE, Honorary Secretary introduced the Theme of the Day as well as the Speakers to the gathering.

During the Interactive session, many pertinent questions were raised and discussed at length. Past Chairman Er. Manohar Singh FIE, Immediate Past Chairman Er. T. N. Krishnamoorthi FIE, Past Honorary Secretaries Er. J. I. Koilraj, Er. M. Balamurugan & Er. Usha Stephen, Executive Committee Members of the A & N State Centre of The Institution of Engineers (India), Members of IEI, Engineers from various departments / organisations & students from schools and colleges took part in the proceedings. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Er. Johnson Abraham, MIE, Honorary Secretary.
