CIARI’s weather based agro advisories

Port Blair, Sept 04: The AGROMET bulletin of Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) has predicted that cloudy weather with moderate rainfall is likely to occur during next five days in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. North and Middle Andaman District is expected to receive 129 mm of rainfall and South Andaman is expected to receive 95 mm of rainfall whereas Nicobar Islands are expected to receive 66 mm of rainfall during this period. The maximum temperature in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be in the range of 29 to 30 degree Celsius, whereas the minimum temperature is expected to be in the range of 24 to 25 degree Celsius. The maximum and minimum relative humidity is expected to be in the range of 79 to 82 % and 73 to 80 % respectively in the Isles.

Rice farmers of the North, Middle and South Andaman Islands have been advised by CIARI to control leaf folder in rice main field by setting up light traps @ 4/hectare to attract and kill the adult moths. Fish fingerlings of IMC carps may be fed with the mixture of rice bran and ground nut oil cake at 1:1 ratio at the rate of 2 % of body weight. Poultry farmers shall keep the poultry litters dry by stirring the litters frequently and adding hydrated limes at the rate of 7 kg per 100 sq feet floor space.

Vegetable growers of Nicobar Islands have been advised by CIARI to prepare raised bed in home garden and sow 3-4 seed of cucurbit and 2-3 seeds of beans per pit. Poultry farmers of the Nicobar Islands shall keep the poultry litters dry by stirring the litters frequently and adding hydrated limes at the rate of 7 kg per 100 sq feet floor space.
