Port Blair, Jan 20: As a part of Police Week 2019, CID unit, A&N Police, organized a seminar on the topic “Policing in Modern India: Emerging Challenges” was organized at JNRM College, Port Blair on Saturday.
Mr. Dependra Pathak, IPS, Director General of Police, A&N Islands was the chief guest in this seminar. Mr. Pradip Banerjee, Secretary (Law), A&N Administration, Prof. Francis Xavier, Principal, JNRM College and Dr. C. Satish, Asstt. Professor, Andaman Law College was other speakers in this seminar.
This seminar was attended by Mrs. Rupa Ray, Mr. Sanjib Mondal, Adhyaksha, Zila Parishad, South Andaman, the students and teachers of JNRM, Andaman Law College, DBRAIT and ANCOL apart from senior officials of A&N Police, A&N Administration and the armed forces.
Mr. Deepak Yadav, IPS, while presenting the welcome speech highlighted the new roles and responsibilities of Police due to liberalization, prominence of on human rights, cross border terrorism, organized crimes, cyber crimes etc. Professor Francis Xavier made a comparison between the Police in colonial times and modern India and spoke about the need to inculcate technology for bringing about reforms in the functioning of Police. Asstt. Professor, C. Satish discussed various challenges facing Indian Police such as non-implementation of Police reforms, shortage of manpower, allegations of violation of human rights etc. Secretary (Law) Mr. Pradip Banerjee narrated an incident of cyber crime and highlighted the inadequacy of present laws to meet the challenges posed by the tech savvy cyber criminals and emphasized on the need to strengthen the legal framework.
Director General of Police, Mr. Dependra Pathak took the audience through the evolutionary journey of Policing in modern India. He discussed the need and role of Policing during ancient times, rule of Guptas, Mauryas, Mughals and British Empire. He emphasized on the need to use technology and develop new systems and procedures to meet the challenges being faced by Police in modern times. On this occasion, he also told the students to develop scientific temperament to develop a good understanding of the world. Speaking about Big History, he traced the evolution of the universe and arrival of modern men on Earth. He said that the present era is a golden age never seen in the history of civilization marked by eminence of individual freedom and rule of law. Towards the end of his speech he spoke on Indian and western Philosophy and how it helped in development of modern nations, democracy, criminal justice system etc. He urged the students to focus on their core academic subjects for success in the examinations but also have wide knowledge for broadening of their horizons. This seminar ended with a vote of thanks by Ms. Sandhya Swamy, IPS.
