Cycling tour for promoting eco tourism

Port Blair, Sept 09: Mr. Yashpal Garg, MD, ANIIDCO and Secretary (Tourism) flagged off Cycle Tour to Andaman today from Cellular Jail organized by ANIIDCO in association with Tourism Department and Andaman Chamber of Commerce & Industries (ACCI). 15 riders from mainland and Andaman are participating in the event. The cycle tour involves riding around 50 Kms from Port Blair to Jirkatang on the 1st day, 56 Kms. from Baratang to Yeratta Jetty excluding Jarawa reserve on the 2nd day and on the 3rd day the group would trek to Lalaji Bay, Long Island.

Cycling through country side is an alternative way to see the beautiful landscape and connect with the local people and the place. Cycling tourism is a growing concept and with many popular cycling tours of Western Ghat, Goa and Rajasthan. Cycling tour is a good means to combine leisure, physical activity and sightseeing in an eco friendly way. Andaman has potential for development of Cycling tourism as a product considering its tropical lush green rainforest and beautiful beaches. It will be an endeavour to make the cycling tour an annual event at larger scale.

The Cycling group will also be interacting with school children and PRI of Long Island during the tour.
