Disaster Management organizes exhibition & mock drill in schools

Port Blair, Jan 13: Mock drills on earthquake were conducted on 11.01.2019 at Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Bathu Basti, Invent Public School, Prothrapur and Saraswathi Shisu Mandir School, Prothrapur. The drills started with the issuing of warning alarm and all the students carried out “Duck-Cover and Hold” positions for few minutes in their respective classes for earthquake safety and then safely evacuated and assembled at identified safer places. The SAR teams rescued the missing/injured students using Search & Rescue techniques from the classes and provided medical first aid by MFR Teams. The efficacy and readiness of School Response System during any catastrophe was checked and observed by the officers from Disaster Management, Health, A&N Police Fire Services and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in the respective schools.

Mr. Gyan Singh, Asst. Director (Logistics), Mr. Janik Ram, Asst. Director (Admn.), Mr. Deen Mohammed, Safety Officer, Dr. Vazeem Iqbal, Consultant, DDM, Mr. Vikas and Mr. Ravi Ranjan, SI, NDRF, Dr. Shankar, DHS appreciated the efforts of school community of the schools for their active participation in following the steps of mock drill. They also elaborated the importance of mock drill practices to improve disaster preparedness and capacity building of school community. Lesson learnt, gaps and the solutions of the mock drills were also discussed during the briefing session in the respective schools.
Disaster Management Exhibition was also organized at GSSS, Bathu Basti, which was inaugurated by Mr. N.C. Das, Principal, GSSS, Bathu Basti, wherein displayed exhibits i.e. IEC materials, SAR equipments, Fire Extinguishers, MFR Kits. The exhibits were also briefed to the students by DM Officials, NDRF Team, Police Fire personnel and Medical officials. The mock drills and DM Exhibition organized as per the initiative of the National Disaster Management Authority, New Delhi under AMRUT City (Port Blair) to generate adequate and appropriate awareness amongst the children and youths on the basics of disaster management, as said in a press release by Assistant Director (Log.), Directorate of DM, A & N Administration.
