Field day on “Organic Cultivation of Betelvine” by ICAR-CIARI conducted

Port Blair, Sept 26: Farmers’ field day was observed by ICAR-CIARI and KVK, Port Blair on 25.09.2018 at farmer’s field, Shri. Arulandu, New Bimblitan, South Andaman on “Organic cultivation of betelvine in Andaman Islands”. The field day was organized in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Andaman and Nicobar Administration and Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development Board (DASD), Kozhikode. About 25 farmers participated in the field day. Dr. A. Kundu, Director, ICAR-CIARI addressed the farmers about the scope of betelvine cultivation and the economic returns from the crop were discussed. The farmer Mr. Arulandu has cultivated betelvine organically as a creeper crop and gained good economic returns.
Dr. B. A. Jerard, HOD, Horticulture and Forestry, dealt in brief about the uses and by products from betelvine. The production technology of betelvine were explained in detail by the organizers Dr. K. Abirami and Dr. V. Baskaran, Scientists, ICAR-CIARI. The biocontrol method of disease management was dealt by Dr. K. Sakthivel, Scientist, ICAR-CIARI. The experience of the farmer Shri. Arulandu was shared to all the farmers and his integrated farming system was well appreciated by the team of ICAR-CIARI Scientists.
Quality planting material production of betelvine was briefed by Dr. L. B. Singh, SMS, KVK and Dr. V. Damodaran, ACTO, ICAR-CIARI and suggestions were given for sustainable production and crop management.
