Inter Coordination Meeting between ICAR-CIARI and Department of Fisheries held

Port Blair, May 26: An Inter-Coordination Meeting between Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CIARI) and Department of Fisheries, A&N Administration was held at the Conference Hall of O/o.The Registrar of Co-operative Societies, Port Blair on 24.05.2019 to chalk out the modalities of working in tandem for the holistic development of fisheries sector in the Islands. Smt. Nitika Pawar, IAS, Secretary (Fisheries), A&N Administration chaired the meeting attended by Scientists of ICAR-CIARI, Head i/c of KVK-South Andaman, Director and Assistant Directors of Agriculture Department, General Manager and Assistant Manager of NABARD, Zonal Director of Fisheries Survey of India, Director of Industries Department, Project Manager of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture and Officer In-charge of ACOSTI, NIOT. At the outset, Dr. A. Kundu, Director, CIARI briefed about the purpose of the meeting and appraised about the activities being carried out by CIARI for the development of fisheries sector in the Islands. Then, the forum deliberated on various issues viz. policy framework for importing fish seeds from mainland, managing non-native species and bio-security; promoting fishery based entrepreneurship through product development, value addition and freshwater ornamental fish culture; utilizing the seawater inundated areas during Tsunami for brackish water fisheries and tourism; and up scaling the research on Sea Weed Culture and Open Sea Cage Culture. Dr. R. Jaya Kumaravaradan, Scientist, ICAR-CIARI coordinated the proceedings.
