‘National Nutrition Week Celebration in JNRM’

Port Blair, Sept 07: The Department of Homescience, JNRM observed National Nutrition Week from 1st to 7th September 2018 to create awareness on the importance of nutrition for health which has an impact on development, productivity, economic growth and national development. This year the National Nutrition week is observed under the theme of “Ensuring focused interventions on addressing under-nutrition during the first 1000 days of the Child: Better Child Health”.
Speaking on the occasion Dr N Francis Xavier, Principal, JNRM and Chief Guest of the programme appreciated the students for their efforts and oriented them on the historic importance of nutrition with specific reference to the Japanese invasion in Andaman and also food insecurity in some parts of India due to famine. He underscored the need of nutrients in our daily diet and wanted the home science students to be a torch bearer to remove malnutrition in this Islands.
K.Venkatesan, HOD, Homescience and Convener of this programme stressed the need to have balanced and nutritious food in making young India as Health India. To raise ahead in the UNDP Human Development Index, in India alongwith other indicators Nutrition and Health also should go hand in hand. The kitchen garden the is best household remedy for getting organic and nutritious fruits and vegetables, he added.
Smt.Nidhi Shekhawat Assistant Professor of Homescience spoke about the nutrition and vital role for the pregnant and lactating mother. The basic five food groups in our diet can do wonder and get rid of all nutritional deficiencies, she added. Smt.Nitika Garhia, Resource Person of Home Science discussed the significance and importance of observing National Nutrition Week on par with other parts of mainland India. In the recent days the nutrition education has added a momentum which lead to health conscious among the public, she added.
In this connection the Department of Home Science also organised a poster competition for the students of JNRM. Altogether 80 students took part in the poster competition and Ist Prize won by Ms. P.Nomeshwari and Ms.Anisha Banu, IInd Prize won by Ms Muskan and IIIrd Prize won by Ms.Sangeetha Bepari and appreciation prize was also give to Ms.R Deepthi, Ms.S.Pavithra, Ms.P.Jayabharathi and Ms.N.Shalini. A film on balanced and nutritious diet screened. Ms.Reshma of Ist B.Sc. Home Science moderated the programme.
