Our Government is committed to balanced and sustained development of all the sections of the society: Dr. Thaawarchand Gehlot: 788 Divyangjan presented with Aids and Assistive Devices during Samajik Adhikarita Shivir

Port Blair, Jan 29: Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Thaawarchand Gehlot today said that the Union Government led by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi is committed to a balanced and sustained development of all the sections of the society and is dedicated to the welfare of the poor. The Minister was speaking on the occasion of a Samajik Adhikarita Shivir organised in the Dr. B R Ambedkar Auditorium of Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) at Port Blair for the distribution of Aids and Assistive devices to Divyangjans and senior citizens belonging to BPL category under Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase / Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP) Scheme and ‘Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana’.
Highlighting the achievements of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on the occasion, the Minister said that so far the Ministry has organised more than 7500 such camps throughout the country thereby benefitting more than 12 Lakhs beneficiaries. “More than 700 Crore Rupees worth of Aids and Assistive devices have been distributed through such camps”, he added. The Minister also elaborated various scholarship Schemes, Skill Training Scheme and benefits being extended by the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry to Divyangjan for their welfare.
The Minister further informed the gathering that the Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment is contemplating on organising one such camp in Nicobar district also. Public Participation is the key to success of any scheme, he said emphasising the importance of Public Participation. Dr Gehlot congratulated the Member of Parliament Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Lieutenant Governor Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Admiral D K Joshi (retd), Public representatives and Officers of Andaman and Nicobar Islands for proactive steps taken by them for the welfare of Senior Citizens/Widows, Anganwadi Workers and Divyangjans in the islands.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Lieutenant Governor, Andaman and Nicobar Administration Admiral D K Joshi (retd) informed that the with a population of 6660 Divyangjan in the islands the Administration has identified 25 buildings to be made Divyangjan friendly under Sugamya Bharat. He also explained that the present Government has increased the categories of Divyangjan from 7 to 21 to give benefit to all categories of Divyangjans to ensure none of the Divyanjan is left from being benefitted from government schemes. Member of Parliament, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray also shared his views on the occasion and explained measures undertaken in the Andaman and Nicobar islands to improve the life and status of the Widows, Senior Citizens, Divyangjans, Anganwadi workers etc.
Earlier, the Divyang children of Vocational Rehabilitation Centre, Brookshabad welcomed the Minister and other Dignitaries with a dance presentation. The Union Minister presented a cash prize of Rs 5000 to the children on behalf of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
During the camp, a total of 788 beneficiaries were presented with Aids and Assistive Devices like smart walking sticks, hearing aid devices, wheel Chairs etc worth Rs 53 Lakh Rupees. The camp was a combined effort of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Department of Social Welfare, Andaman and Nicobar Administration and Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), Nilesh Kumar Kalbhor IIS, Deputy Director(M&C), PIB Port Blair.
