Training on Scientific Goat and Pig Farming at Baratang and Nimbudera

Port Blair, Dec 21: Animal Science Division, ICAR-CIARI in collaboration with ICAR-KVK, Nimbudera organized twin training programme on scientific goat and pig farming for improving productivity from 17-18 December 2018 at Baratang and Nimbudera. A total of 66 farmers participated in both the programmes. The training was inaugurated by Mr. Lorentus Bara, Pradhan, Harinagar Panchayat as the chief guest in presence of Mr. Prabhakaran Nair, Sarpanch, Dr. Jai Sunder, PI, AICRP-Goat, Dr. M.S.Kundu, PI-AICRP-Pig, Dr. B.L. Kashinath, Sr Scientist & Head, KVK and Dr. S.V.Lal, SMS(AS), KVK. In his inaugural address, Mr. Bara appreciated the interest of the farmers on goat and pig rearing in scientific way and thanked the Director, ICAR-CIARI for conducting such programme at Harinagar panchayat. He urged all the farmers to utilize the opportunity for improving the productivity and taking goat and pig farming in more scientific way. Dr. Jai Sunder, PI of the goat project briefed about the origin of the project on goat improvement for the benefit of farmers to sustain the livelihood security through goat rearing. He detailed about the implementation of the project and mentioned that it is aimed to improve the goat population in these Islands through scientific interventions. He urged all the farmers to know about the basic information viz., feeding, selection of superior animals for breeding, health status and marketing in particular; he also stressed on formation of goat cooperative society for systematic implementation of rearing practices and to avail various facilities through the society.
Dr. M.S.Kundu highlighted the importance and advantages of pig farming. He also explained in detailed about the importance of growing fodder and technology for round the year cultivation of green fodder under different farming system. Dr. B.L. Kashinath mentioned that there is high demand of goat and pig meat and farmers can start up the goat and pig farming in a commercial way with the technical guidance and support of CIARI and KVK. Dr. S.V. Lal explained about the present status of the pig and goat farming in the region and also spoken about the ways to overcome the problems and constraints. The farmers also interacted with the resource personals on various field problems. On the occasion packets of mineral mixture and vitamin tonics were also distributed to the farmers.
