ZSI celebrates World Ozone Day-2018: “collective contribution towards environment is the need of the hour”

Port Blair, Sept 14: Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Port Blair celebrated World Ozone Day -2018 at a function in its Auditorium today. Professor Gurmeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, Pondicherry University was the Chief Guest on the Occasion.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Professor Gurmeet Singh pressed on the need of collective contribution to save Planet Earth from the Ozone depleting substances.” Aim of Ozone day celebration is to make people aware that every body’s contribution is required to save earth. Let this practice of contribution become a movement. Anything that is going to react with Ozone layer must be contained and its use must be stopped”, he said. Prof. Gurmeet Singh appreciated ZSI Port Blair’s efforts in organising World Ozone Day Celebration. He also presented certificates to the participants of a conference held earlier during the day to commemorate World Ozone Day.
Speaking on the occasion, Major General (Dr) R P Choubey (Retired), Director Andaman and Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences(ANIIMS), Port Blair highlighted the ill effects of ultraviolet rays causing sunburn, tanning, reduced immunity and various types of skin cancers.
In his address, Inspector General M V Pathak, Commander Indian Coast Guard, informed the gathering that the Indian Coast Guard Planted about 1 lakh trees all over the country in its initiative towards green and clean environment.
Welcoming the guests, Officer-in-Charge ZSI, Port Blair Dr. C Sivaperumanbriefly explained the phenomenon of Ozone layer depletion and the measures to prevent it. Mr. Amit Anand, Director Tourism, Andaman and Nicobar Administration also spoke on the occasion. The theme of the World Ozone Day – 2018 is “Keep Cool and Carry On”.
