Member of Parliament demands uninterrupted power supply and solution for frequent power cut problem

Port Blair, Apr 29: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration to provide uninterrupted power supply and to find the faults and take necessary measures to stop such power cuts.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary the Member of Parliament mentioned that he has been approached by a large number of parents, business owners, local youths and the general public, who have raised serious concerns over frequent power cuts in the South Andaman region.
He added that the exams for Class X and Class XII are being conducted in the Islands, thousands of students are facing immense hardship in focusing on their studies and completing necessary revisions. Parents are also equally worried as the power cuts are causing a great deal of inconvenience for their children.
The Member of Parliament pointed out that due to frequent power cuts, electronic equipment in their homes are getting damaged and Islanders are unable to carry out normal daily chores at home.
He added that thousands of students in different schools are also suffering heavily due to frequent power cuts in the South Andaman region during school hours, considering the hot and humid season.
He also mentioned that power cuts are also causing huge problems in G B Pant Hospital as due to insufficient power backup many medical equipment and expensive machines could not be operated in the desired manner.
The Member of Parliament mentioned that Small and Medium business owners, who can’t afford  generators, are also equally hit by frequent power cuts as they are witnessing heavy loss in business because during power cuts they are unable to operate computers and other machines. Shops are facing difficulties in billing and managing their business.
He pointed out that people of every sector are going through huge problems due to such frequent power cuts, which amounts to around 10 to 12 power cuts a day.
“It is learnt that due to the lack of power backup system in the Solar Power Plant, the electricity department is facing such issues,” he said.
Hence the Member of Parliament requested the Chief Secretary to issue necessary directions to the Electricity Department to provide uninterrupted power supply and to find the faults and take necessary measures to stop such power cuts.
