Workshop on Rural Tourism and its Aspects under Namunaghar Gram Panchayat

Port Blair, Oct 14: An initiative for the Development of Rural Tourism was organized in the South Andaman at Namunaghar Gram, Panchayat Bhavan on 11.10.2018 at 11.00 by India Tourism Port Blair, Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India with the collaboration of a leading travel desk and with the support of Mrs. Preethima Kumari Tirkey, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat, Namunaghar. The village has got four thousand populations and well connected by road and vehicle ferry (which is the life-line between the islands).
During the Programme Ms. Moutoshi Naskar, Assistant Director, Govt. of India, I/c India Tourism Port Blair, Ministry of Tourism, addressed to villagers and made aware about Rural Tourism. She also explained about the Important key points and discussed about that what kind of destination it could be considered and what kind of tourism product could be made available to tourists as well as the category of the tourists to focus on for this area.
During the programme various observations were made like the village is located near Viper Island (the prisoners were hanged by British before independence) which has got historical significance; the sequential ruins which are still in unattended position and now government is trying to prevent those ruins from further demolition and a half day or full day activity could be started with the initiative of the local youth and villagers which could lead to create employment in the field like guiding, local cuisine, home-stay,camping, country fishing, cycle ride for tour, trekking at Mount Harriet National Park, etc.
The meeting concluded that the location of the village is well connected, area has got historical potential, various activities could be introduced under eco-tourism and rural tourism, camping – cycle-ride and fishing could be the most attractive initiative in the area as far as tourism is concerned.
