Member of Parliament demands Desilting of old Dam and repair of secondary Dam of Kadamtala region to permanently solve the water crisis problem of the region

Port Blair, June 14: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration to carry out desilting of the old Dam and repair the leakage of the second dam, so that the water crisis problem of Kadamtala region is solved forever.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary the Member of Parliament pointed out that every year from the month of March end to May end, the entire region of Kadamtala faces a water crisis. In many cases water has to be distributed in many pockets using water tankers.

He added that in the late 1980s, a Dam was constructed at Camp Number 3 area of Kadamtala region by APWD but over the years, due to deposit of silts, the water carrying capacity of the Dam has reduced significantly and hence large amounts of water overflow during the rainy season.

Later in 2003-2004, to store the overflowing excess water from the old Dam, another Dam was constructed below the first Dam of Kadamtala.

The Member of Parliament pointed out that due to leakage in this new Dam, this new dam also can’t hold water for a longer time, which causes a water crisis in Kadamtala region, almost every year.

He added that although due to heavy rainfall in 2021 and 2022, there was no serious water crisis in Kadamtala region this year, there is a need to plan for the future and take adequate precaution so that the entire area of Kadamtala does not face a water crisis again.
